Irina Rivera, Ph.D.
My life has not gone in a straight line. I came to this work via film production, raising children, and my own journey towards growth. Consequently, I do not engage in a cookie cutter approach because I think that is an injustice towards your lived experience.
Therapy can offer some immediate relief from stress, depression, and anxiety, but I also work with clients to make lasting changes in the way you see and relate to yourself and others. I work with university students, couples, and adults.
Psychotherapy can enhance every aspect of your life but it is not necessarily an easy journey. You set the pace and my motto is “everything is talkable.” I engage in a collaborative and relational approach that is culturally sensitive to your particular background. Usually it is the topics we avoid talking about that most hinder us. A relational approach means that as you feel comfortable, we can delve more deeply into what you might be avoiding. It also means that I invite feedback at all stages of our work. I create a safe space by leaning into empathy, but I also challenge my clients because I believe people want to get “unstuck.” I recognize people both want to change and also fear making changes. The process of therapy is a journey where the vicissitudes of life can be felt and examined in a way that allows lasting change.
